Essentially, Graphic Science will give the job to whoever brings a trampoline to the interview. The bigger the better! Those with only a trampette need not apply.

The discussions on this list provide me endless amusement!

If anyone happens to know of any science communication positions in the US, especially involving video/television, I'd be super grateful if you passed them along. And if they require bounce or enthusiasm, great, I can do that!

Thanks,
Katrina

What Criteria will you be using to assess ‘bounce’?

Dear Ben,

It's very generous of you to let us all know that they consider themselves to have done such a good job.

Dear All,

Following comments on this list yesterday, I have discussed this further with our HR consultancy who look after all aspects of HR for us including recruitment.

Their view is that yesterday's post was fully compliant with both legislation and recognised best practice in the area. Specifically, they do not consider the word "bounce" to be in any way exclusionary or discriminatory.

Moving beyond the obvious inadequacy of such a subjective criterion, care should be taken that the choice of words doesn't (inadvertently, or unconsciously) discriminate unlawfully.

An example is the use of "dynamic", which is deprecated as it might be seen to favour younger, able bodied candidates. I feel that "bounce" has a similar problem.

Similarly, shortlisting and interview methods need to be carefully considered.

Indeed, how many are fully aware of the requirements regarding recruitment and employment of the Equality Act 2010?

Oh, that's funny. I wonder, are these 'people with "bounce"' the 'passionate' types that so many job adverts seem to require these days?

My dear list,

A colleague at the Royal Society has just advised me to advertise jobs for people with "bounce". Will you please therefore bring the following to the attention of all those contacts you may have with that quality. Please note, I am unable at this stage to specify a required height of bounce, but I think we can assume that enough will be sufficient.
