Qualitative Research Methods Workshop: 'PhD bootcamp: writing up'
Thursday 28th - Friday 29th November 2013
We are delighted to announce the next workshop in our Research Methods series; PhD bootcamp: writing up. This workshop will be facilitated by our Professor of Health Care Rosaline Barbour.
Following on from Identifying and interrogating patterning and Using theory in qualitative data analysis this will be a two-day intensive workshop for doctoral students in the final year of writing-up. Places are limited to 16 delegates in order to afford the opportunity for individualised advice and guidance.
Professor Rosaline (Rose) Barbour has extensive experience of supervising PhD students and examining theses, and will also draw on her own experience of publishing, reviewing, serving on editorial boards, and as a journal editor. She will also provide one-to-one consultation slots throughout the two days. Although students might write relatively brief sections during the workshop they will leave equipped with new transferable skills and will also benefit from the opportunity to discuss specific challenges with other 'bootcamp' delegates.
Writing-up a PhD can be a lonely and daunting enterprise and the aim of the workshop is to provide a supportive and constructive environment in which participants can make significant progress - whether this involves overall planning of the thesis; re-ordering of material; writing linking passages; producing summaries or selecting appropriate headings. Participants are urged to discuss in advance with their supervisors and to come to the workshop with a clear idea of what they wish to achieve. It is also possible for delegates to submit short extracts and queries in advance of the workshop. The format will involve a mixture of presentations and targeted group exercises, with blocks of time set aside over the two days, during which delegates can work on their laptops, with the opportunity to check in regularly with the workshop facilitator.
Workshop package
This workshop is only available as a 2-day package Thursday 28th-Friday 29th November for £295, and is only open to current PhD students. This includes dinner at Brasserie Blanc on Thursday 28th November.
Final year PhD students are likely to find the material most relevant. Please be aware that proof of PhD status will be required.
Places are limited to 16 delegates in order to afford the opportunity for individualised advice and guidance.
