Hi Nick,
I can see why some might be attracted by a custom build CMS, but I agree with Mike Ellis. From a sustainability point of view, I would avoid something that depends on one company or 1-2 individuals to understand the system, and that would require being locked into a maintenance contract and/or licence for the rest of the website's lifetime.
I also think that it's essential to separate the content from presentation. Of course, the content must always be quite easy to migrate if necessary.
I also use WordPress. I decided on it partly because it has the design as a separate layer from the content and functional elements of the sites, and it is a flexible system.
People have said to me that they don't like the generic look of a WordPress site, but I suspect that if they've visited one with a theme (CSS) designed specifically for the individual site they won't have realised it's a WP site.
The RA website redevelopment project should be a great one to work on - and I look forward to seeing the results. Best of luck in your new job!
