PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: 9th October 2013, Cambridge UK and New York, USA
Cambridge University Press is pleased to announce that it will begin
publishing Iraq on behalf of The British Institute for the Study of Iraq
(BISI) from 2014. This is the fifth journal affiliated with the British
Academy to be published by Cambridge and further cements the Press’s
position as the leading publisher of humanities scholarship with one of the
most distinguished lists in classics and archaeology.
Iraq is an annual academic periodical founded in 1934. It publishes
articles on the history, art, archaeology, religion, economic and social
life of Iraq and, to a lesser degree, of the neighbouring countries where
they relate to it, from the earliest times to about AD 1750. Iraq has been
a vehicle especially for the art and archaeology of Mesopotamia and for
Assyriology, although the Editors welcome contributions on a greater range
of academic areas including aspects of early Islamic, medieval and early
Ottoman Iraq.
The journal will be available in print and electronic formats on Cambridge
Journals Online and will be digitised as part of the Cambridge Journals
Digital Archive. It will be the first time the journal publishes articles
online.
"This is a very exciting partnership for The British Institute for the
Study of Iraq," says Dr Eleanor Robson, Chair of the Institute's governing
Council. "Having Cambridge as the publisher of Iraq will enable us to reach
a wider readership than ever before, both in print and online while keeping
abreast of developments in Open Access publishing. Cambridge's commitment
to the highest production standards and most effective marketing and
distribution methods will enable us to showcase BISI's over eighty years of
excellent research by leading Assyriologists and historians of Iraq."
"We are extremely pleased that Cambridge will be embarking on a publishing
relationship with Iraq from 2014", said Beatrice Rehl, Director of
Publishing Humanities at Cambridge University Press. "Through hosting Iraq
on Cambridge Journals Online, the first time the journal will have a
presence online, we can ensure this important research is disseminated to
many more scholars and readers across the globe. The addition of Iraq not
only expands the breadth and depth of our list in humanities, but it also
helps to affirm the Press’s position as one of the most distinguished
publishers of enduring scholarship in the world."
Iraq will be hosted on Cambridge’s electronic platform, Cambridge Journals
Online (http://journals.cambridge.org/irq), which will provide increased
usability, functionality and many new features to enhance and optimise
article usage.
