Thanks for that. The problem, however is not that the 3d rendering does not work, it does. It's just that the overlay 'image type' is not recognised as a Statistic, it is considered to be type 'Unknown.' My question is whether it is possible to force FSLView to recognize the image as a statistic.

The command, or one very similar, appears to work on my local (3.2.0) version of fslview. I suspect 3d mode selection may have been broken in 3.1.8 and you will need to upgrade. Sorry.
