Dear Colleagues,
I am a doctoral student from the University of Toronto, Canada. I work on refugee and irregular migration flows between MENA and Europe.
I'm looking for contact information for officials in the Swedish asylum system.
I have a good friend from Gaza who claimed asylum in Sweden some months ago. His claim for asylum rests on a number of levels of political and religious persecution, as well as physical abuse and detainment amounting to torture, at the hands of the ruling Hamas party in Gaza. This persecution culminated in threats on his life, which precipitated his final departure from Gaza.
He is currently housed in a small, rural community while he awaits the processing of his claim, and is complaining of severe social isolation. He had a nervous breakdown and is now experiencing severe insomnia. To make matters much worse, his room mate and only daily contact is a member of Hamas (though from the West Bank).
His preferred solution seems to be relocation to Malmö, where he has a network of friends and access to meaningful social interactions. If this is not possible then it is imperative he be granted access to some sort of psychosocial support in his current environs.
I would very much appreciate some advice on who to contact in the Swedish asylum system or perhaps an NGO that will advocate on his behalf.
Sincerely,
Craig D. Smith, MSc
