Dear friends of Inclusion Europe,
The long-awaited High-Level Meeting on Disability and Development took place last week in New York, calling for full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the global development agenda. Indeed, despite 137 ratifications of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, urgent action is needed to ensure that persons with disabilities all over the world can enjoy, on an equal basis with others, access to fundamental resources such as education, employment or healthcare.
Access to equal rights and opportunities will be a central demand at the European conference of self-advocates, starting this Friday in Croatia. Over 100 self-advocates and supporters from different parts of Europe will gather in Zagreb this weekend to discuss strategies to strengthen the self-advocacy movement and combat discrimination Europe-wide.
Access to person-centred support is essential for full inclusion and participation of persons with intellectual disabilities in society. The European project New Paths to Inclusion Network looks for innovative ways of ensuring that such support is widely available. More information on the activities of this Network can be found on the re-launched project website.
