Dear Colleagues and friends,
The disability movement in Zimbabwe is delighted that, following years
of painful lobbying for the ratification of the CRPD, the Government
of Zimbabwe finally ratified it on the 23rd of September 2013
during the UN General Assembly's HLMDD. The Government ratified both
the Convention and its Optional Protocol. We know that this is just
the beginning of the most important part of our work of ensuring that
the Convention is implemented and the rights of all disabled people
are observed and protected. This is the hard part and we are not going
to tire or rest on our laurels until all disabled people in the
country are aware of their rights and are aware of the provisions of
the CRPD. We will now focus on advocating and lobbying for its
domestication and alignment with our national laws for the full
protection of our rights. This will undoubtedly be a daunting task and
will need support from fellow disabled people across the world as well
as from non-disabled colleagues who share with us the philosophy of
equality and respect for the dignity and full enjoyment of our rights.
We are therefore kindly requesting you to point us to any immediate
possible sources for funding specifically targeted for raising
awareness on the provisions of the CRPD among disabled people and the
overall strategic monitoring of the implementation of the Convention,
by our local DPOs.
We will be very grateful if anyone can help.
Kindest regards,
Kudzai Shava
