Well that clears that up. The different behaviour under Java 6 probably confused things - since we now require Java 7, Dawn should not start if not running under Java 7.
In fact, there is a ticket for this already (http://jira.diamond.ac.uk/browse/DAWNSCI-748), and the description says "Under the default Java on ws069 (1.6), Dawn starts up but does not have all of the perspectives and views we expect.". Let's add that check soon.
