Call for Papers: Bourdieu and Education

BSA Annual Conference – Sociology of Education Stream

23-25 April 2014

University of Leeds

Bourdieu’s theories have been highly influential both theoretically and empirically in the field of educational research. In the current context of the widening debates on class inequalities in educational attainment and questions of social class reproduction in the changing education system, application and critical engagement with Bourdieu’s theoretical concepts seem even more essential.

The BSA Bourdieu study group are pleased to announce that we will be having a special sub-stream in the Sociology of Education stream at the forthcoming British Sociological Association (BSA) 2014 Annual Conference: Changing Society. The conference will take place at the University of Leeds from 23-25 April 2014 and promises to be dynamic, informative, inspiring and is definitely not to be missed.

We are calling for papers on the broad theme of Bourdieu and education, including any methodological questions. Please submit your abstracts to the Sociology of Education stream with ‘for the attention of the Bourdieu study group’ written on it. The word limit is 250 words.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT ORAL PAPERS

The presenting author should complete the online submission form. Visit the BSA Annual Conference website. Once you click on the ‘submit’ link on the conference homepage you will then need to select either ‘BSA member submission’ or ‘non member submission.

The Bourdieu study group coordinators (in agreement with stream coordinators) will allocate Oral Papers. All oral presentations will be 20-minute papers so you should plan to speak for 15 minutes and allow 5 minutes for comments and questions. However, if the number of abstracts submitted is more than can be accommodated using the conventional format of presentation then we may include some roundtable sessions. If this is necessary then similar papers will be grouped together and sessions allocated on a random basis to the programme.

18 October 2013 – Last date for submission of abstracts.

The aims of the BSA annual conference are: to showcase the latest sociological research; to attract a concentration of international specialists in our major research fields; to provide a forum in which to discuss the teaching of sociology and the professional practice of being a sociologist; and to facilitate debate, networking and professional development opportunities. The BSA annual conference is the primary annual conference for sociology in the UK with opportunities for everyone connected to the discipline. As such, there are many different streams at the BSA, so if your research does not fall within education and Bourdieu, you may wish to submit to another stream.

We look forward to seeing you there!

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE OF YOUR ABSTRACT

Presenters will be sent an e-mail informing them whether their abstract has been accepted after 22 November 2013. Presenters will subsequently be informed by email of the day and time slot allocated for their presentation. If you do not receive confirmation by 29 November 2013, please telephone the BSA office urgently on +44(0)191 383 0839. It is important that correct contact details during November are provided at the time that abstracts are submitted.

PERSONS WHO ARE GIVING A PRESENTATION

Must register for the conference by 17 January 2014. The conference organisers reserve the right to exclude presenters who have not registered by this time from the programme. • Note it is very important that you turn up to deliver your paper.
