Technology, care and ageing: enhancing independence
AKTIVE Final Conference 2014
8-9 April 2014, University of Leeds, UK
About the conference and the AKTIVE project
This conference brings together researchers, industry, voluntary sector and local authorities interested in the role of telecare and other technologies in supporting older people at home.
The conference is organised by the AKTIVE project (2011-2014). AKTIVE has focused on understanding the impact telecare technology has on the everyday lives of older people who are prone to falls or who suffer from cognitive impairments (including dementia) and the people who support them to live at home.
The conference will be the conclusion of the AKTIVE project and the key findings of the project will be presented. We welcome this opportunity to invite other experts and practitioners in this field to contribute. As part of the final conference of this project, we are seeking papers and presentations exploring the role of telecare and other technologies, such as telehealth, in supporting older people at home.
The conference programme will be focused not only on research done in those areas but also on the application of the research in practice by listening to experiences of organisations from the UK and abroad. The objective of the conference is to share a wide range of perspectives on the role of technologies in the lives of older people and to provide delegates with guidance and inspiration for their operations.
The recruitment of conference contributors will take place through a call for papers as well as targeted invitations for selected organisations. If you think your organisation could contribute to the discussion by sharing their experience with others on the day, please get in touch with us directly for more information.
Call for papers
Papers/posters should focus on support arrangements for older people to live independently. Papers/posters focusing on the role of technology in supporting them, their carers (family, friends and neighbours) and service providers who attend them are particularly welcome. The AKTIVE project has been concerned with older people with memory problem or at risk of falls, papers/posters on these themes are encouraged.
Suggested topics might include but are not limited to:
1. Older people’s everyday lives. Coping with change, ageing bodies and frailty. We welcome papers which explore methodological issues when conducting research into older people’s needs.
2. Family and community support for older people. Loneliness, social isolation and relationships.
3. Services to support older people and their caring networks. New and emerging models of home care: where does technology fit in?
4. Telecare delivery models and systems. Assessment, referral, installation, maintenance, monitoring and response.
5. Funding and business models for telecare and telehealth. Cost / benefits, private pay systems, charging policies and their impacts. Integrating health and social care systems. Market opportunities.
6. Innovation, design and new products for ageing well. Managing risk, freedom, surveillance and control.
