Post-doctoral position in the Solar Department, Astronomical Institute AS CR, Ondrejov, Czech Republic

A one year position as postdoctoral research fellow in solar physics is available from January 1, 2014 at the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Ondrejov.
The postdoctoral fellow will be working on the project “Flare Chromospheres: Observations, Models and Archives” funded by the EC programme FP7-SPACE-2012. Applicants should have a PhD in astrophysics and research experience in computer modelling, Fortran code development, and IDL data processing. Experience in non-LTE radiative transfer, hydrodynamic and/or radiation hydrodynamics is welcomed.
Salary will be based on standard domestic post-doc level. The position is extendable up to three years depending on research achievements and available funding.

Postdoctoral position in STIX/SO software development at the University of Graz

The Institute of Physics of the University of Graz, Austria, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in software development for the STIX (Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays) instrument on the upcoming Solar Orbiter mission. STIX provides imaging spectroscopy of solar thermal and non-thermal X-ray emissions from ~4 to 150 keV with unprecedented spatial resolution and sensitivity, to achieve a better understanding of the acceleration of electrons at the Sun and their transport into interplanetary space.
The applicant is expected to have a PhD in astrophysics, physics or a related field, and a good background in physics-based programming. Knowledge of solar high-energy radiation, X-ray spectroscopy, data analysis, and the IDL programming language is desirable.
The position will be initially available for two years with the anticipated start time 2014 January 1, with possible extension. The basic gross salary for this employment contract will be 47,800 Euro/year, subject to local taxes and the employee’s contribution to social security.
