You are invited to attend an interdisciplinary one-day symposium
‘The rise of the big machine: The use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in healthcare’,
December 10th 2013, 10am-4pm
Conference Room, Interdisciplinary Centre for the Social Sciences (ICOSS)
University of Sheffield
Postgraduate students from social sciences are particularly encouraged to attend and submit a poster presentation. An award will be given for best poster presented at the event.
Participation is free, however places are limited and early registration is recommended. To book a place, please email: [log in to unmask] with your name, address, institutional affiliation. If you are a student, please indicate if you would like to display a poster presentation. Deadline for registration is 22nd November 2013.
The symposium, sponsored by the University of Sheffield and Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness, will bring together a range of experts from sociology, social studies of science and technology, industry and medicine to discuss themes including:
• The ways in which MRI is socially and culturally mediated
• How MRI is produced, marketed and adopted in healthcare settings
• The shifts in relationships (lay and professional) that emerge as a result of this technology
• The use of MRI as part of a broader trend towards visualisation in medicine
• The construction of the body through imaging technology.
We hope to foster the development of networks and further research in this field. One aim is to contribute to emerging debates on this technology-in-the-making, thereby broadening discussion on health technology within the sociology of health and illness. A buffet lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
