I was in a new media studio at a London educational institution earlier
in the year that still had its slide library hidden away behind the door
at the entrance. :-)
To state an embarrassingly obvious but nonetheless important fact part
of the self-image of New Media art is often its newness. This can
express itself positively in refreshing approaches to problems, or
negatively in the endless re-implementation of old methods that have
been historically and technically forgotten.
I agree that a new media art history cannot afford to share that
failing. I think this discussion is a good opportunity for wheel
sharing. :-)
From an artistic point of view I am hopeful that the Processing/Github
era of publicly shared Free Software code libraries will led to the
wheel being reinvented less often in software art. Although of course
such projects will themselves be archival challenges over time.
