Dear friends of Inclusion Europe,
Under the title 'Here our voices: Citizens First!', the European conference of self-advocates brought fruitful discussions on different aspects of citizenship. Self-advocates could choose from many thematic workshops and talk about their fundamental rights such as the right to make their own decisions, live independently, have a family and others. Some 100 self-advocates attending the conference were unanimous in demanding legal capacity as a prerequisite for full enjoyment of other rights.
Another important step towards the recognition of the right of people with intellectual disabilities to make their own decisions was taken by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In the draft General Comment on Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Committee invites the State Parties to abolish all substituted decision-making mechanisms, establish a wide range of supports for the exercise of legal capacity and involve people with disabilities and their representatives in this process.
Best wishes,
Information Team
