Global health: Knowledge, Politics, Spaces

This session aims to explore the complex networks and assemblages of expertise, socialities and ethics associated with global health. As the notion of global health becomes ever more ubiquitous (Brown, Cueto and Fee 2006); it is unsurprising that its meanings, purpose and application are not just contested, but also perpetually evolving. This is reinforced by the inherently interdisciplinary nature of global health, which is characterised by a range of actors operating at a multiplicity of scales: WHO epidemiologists surveying the global burden of disease; development specialists exploring the relationships between poverty and disease; physicians working on neglected tropical diseases with funding from the Gates Foundation; economists concerned with the cost effectiveness of health interventions; and human rights lawyers fighting for universal access to medications. Global health is also an innately political field characterised by moral dilemmas, power imbalances and social inequalities. These include: the ethics of outsourcing clinical trials in the Global South; the humanitarian efforts of organisations such as Médecins sans Frontières; the relationships between intellectual property regimes and pharmaceutical innovation; the politics of global health funding in times of austerity; and corporate influences on health policy. Building on these ideas, this session seeks to bring together geographers and other social scientists in an open forum to explore new theoretical and applied lines of research on the promise and possibility of global health and the systems and contexts that drive poor health.
