Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] NMC News on revalidation for Nurses
This isn't really about Nurses, it's about Care.
I'm used to Performance Management and 360 degree feedback. We're either
performing or we're out! The employer does that, not the governing body!
The NMC isn't about protecting Nurses of course; it's all about protecting
the Patient/Public - which is ok by me but guess who's going to pay for
this. I'm expecting to see significant increases in annual
registration-to-practice fees to fund the rippling consequences of the
shocking lack of good management at the Stafford Hospital.
I'm sure revalidation will be a massive and costly task for the NMC to
implement and yet I don't really think this is an NMC/Professional matter at
all. If the NHS took responsibility and had Managers trained to be managers
of people and services rather than simply being experienced in their
specialism, the NHS could be run like the business it is. Instead it's got a
demoralised, miserable, under-resourced and stressed workforce with an
uncontrolled absence problem, no real personnel management and staff costs
through the roof.
Furthermore, [no disrespect to non-trained ward staff] to compensate for the
reduced numbers of trained Nurses who know how to care, the NHS has
compensated by introducing low-cost non-professionally trained ward
personnel to boost the numbers of individuals in the care setting who can
actually do the necessary tasks. Whilst they may have the great attribute of
compassion, they're not trained to care; they're trained to provide care -
and there's a big difference.
