European Borderscapes Symposuim
Fri 18 October, 10:30am - 5:30pm
LUA Project Space
European Borderscapes is a day of presentations and discussion exploring the reconfiguration of European borders after the fall of the Iron Curtain and Eastern enlargement, and how rather than dissolving, the number of borders has multiplied and become more differentiated.
Bringing together research in the social sciences, geography and visual arts this symposium aims to contribute to an interdisciplinary dialogue on how to think about, and deal with borders today. It looks at the contradictions between social and political ideologies: the encouragement of mobility and the increasing controls and restrictions; cross-border cooperation programmes and the strengthening of frontiers; as well as the principles of solidarity within the EU and the emergence of new divisions, such as the recent economic crisis. The symposium will present new research on symbolic and material borders, border crossings and visual representations of borders, as well as artistic practices negotiating borders, with a roundtable discussion on Bordering practices in the UK.
Speakers/participants include Chris Rumford (Royal Holloway), Karolina Follis (Lancaster), Eva Engelbert (independent artist, Austria), Amy Charlesworth (Leeds), Daniel Chernilo, Sabina Mihelj, Karen O'Reilly, Alena Pfoser, Adam Warren (Loughborough), with additional speakers to be announced.
European Borderscapes has been programmed by Alena Pfoser in collaboration with the CulCom Research Group and has been financially supported by Radar, the Graduate School Research Culture Fund and Loughborough University’s Department of Social Sciences.
