Hi Jonathan,
We're in the final stages of our 'Talking Museum' project, and all of the content has been done in-house.
It's a project to create an audio guide and audio descriptions that we can put on our website, for visually impaired visitors (though interesting for non-VI visitors too). A team of U3A volunteers each chose a display (in our small/medium-sized museum) to research and write up, and we asked one of the artists who gives guided tours for visually impaired people at the National Galleries of Scotland to come and give us some training. She also helped me edit the scripts, with a view to making sure they really would be helpful for VI visitors, and I did a quick recording (on my phone!) to put on some MP3 players and test with visually impaired volunteers.
We've just finished editing the 'official' recording, with each writer recording their own bit where possible, with a freelance audio specialist doing the recording and using her own equipment. It's been a long process, and I'm shortly to pass the files over to the people who are supplying the hardware - I'm a bit nervous about the next stage! So far, it's been hugely rewarding, and our triallers got a lot out of even the rough cut.
I dived into this project with just a vague idea, and it's evolved as we've gone along. I wouldn't really recommend that as a method! But do give me a ring or email me if you'd like to discuss any of the aspects of the in-house project and talk over some of the things I learnt along the way. I'm on leave today (just had to check something quickly and couldn't resist replying today), but in the office tomorrow.
Best wishes,
Helen

Subject: Museum Adio Guides
Dear All,
I am currently researching handheld museum audio guides to implement one at The Rhondda Heritage Park in South Wales. I was wondering whether anyone knew of a good one they had come across. Ideally I am looking at ones which were developed in-house, as opposed to outsourcing to a private company, and are in a small to medium sized museum. Any which interpret an industrial museum or landscape would be particularly useful.
I'm already working with a local partner for the hardware and software, it is purely the content which I am interested in researching. If anyone themselves have implemented such a guide, please feel free to send me any tips or useful advice.
Please email me on: [log in to unmask]
Thank you
