Last night I attended an event - http://tinyurl.com/psnblft -
commemorating 9.11.1973, when Pinochet (with substantial support from
the CIA, Kissinger and Nixon) overthrew Salvador Allende's democratic
government in Chile. Especially moving was a talk by Javier Navarro, who
recounted how he survived repeated torture in the stadia and
concentration camps, without giving any comrades' names away. Because of
his role in the ministry of fisheries he also met Pinochet - who he
refused to call El Presidente as instructed by henchmen and by Pinochet
himself - immediately after the coup, and fooled him into giving Javier
thousands of passes ('to collect all the fish supplies') which enabled
comrades to escape from Chile. He himself was not so lucky.
Also shown was Ken Loach's brilliant 11 minute film A Letter from Chile
which features a coup survivor writing to victims of 9.11.2001. It is
very well worth watching - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKYLd1i7lTQ
