And the details

BRITISH GEOPHYSICAL ASSOCIATION IMAGE COMPETITION - 2014

Enter the British Geophysical Association image competition and help
promote UK geophysics. The top prize is £200 and a 1-year membership of
one of the BGA parent societies, the Royal Astronomical Society or the
Geological Society of London. Runner-up prize is a 1-year membership of
one of the parent societies.

Geophysics is the application of physics to study the Earth, oceans,
atmosphere and near-Earth space. It is a broad subject that straddles
many of the major sciences - physics, planetary science, geology,
environmental science, oceanography, and meteorology. A diverse range of
scientists call themselves geophysicists, including seismologists,
meteorologists, glaciologists, geomagnetists and geodesists.

We are looking for dramatic geophysical fieldwork photos, spectacular
images of numerical simulations, stimulating photos of laboratory
experiments in progress, or even geophysical data overlays or drapes on
topography or other surfaces, for example. In fact, anything with a
geophysical context, but the link to geophysics must be obvious within
the image itself. Generic landscape photos are ineligible.

Images must be in JPEG or JPG format. Only e-mail entries will be eligible.

Entrants must consent to the BGA using their image for promotional
purposes, free of charge.

Please submit images by e-mail to [log in to unmask], clearly
indicating “BGA image competition” in the subject line and including in
the body of the email a brief description of the image and its
geophysical relevance.

CLOSING DATE: The competition closes at midnight on the 31 August 2014,
and judging will take place at the BGA Postgraduate Research in Progress
Meeting in Liverpool in early September.

Winning images will be posted on BGA web site and displayed in BGA
publicity material.

BRITISH GEOPHYSICAL ASSOCIATION VIDEO COMPETITION – 2014

Enter the British Geophysical Association video competition and win
£300, helping to promote UK geophysics to the general public.

We are looking for a simple video explanation of a key geophysical
concept, topic, problem, technique or controversy, aimed at school
children of all ages and the wider general public.

Videos must be less than 100s in length and stored in a YouTube
compatible format. Only email entries will be eligible.

By making your submission, you consent to the BGA using your video for
promotional and outreach purposes, free of charge, and permit its
posting on our BGA YouTube channel. Only one entry is allowed per person.

Submit your entry by email to the BGA President, Prof Mike Kendall
([log in to unmask]), including “BGA video competition” in the subject
line. Your email should contain a link to your submission (e.g.
location in your Dropbox) and, in no more than 200 words suitable for
the general public, an explanation of the societal and geophysical
relevance of the chosen topic.

CLOSING DATE: The competition closes at midnight on the 20th December,
2013 and the winner will be announced at the BGA Annual General Meeting
in February 2014.
