This email is a reminder of the RAS Ordinary Discussion Meeting on the
11th October 2013 at which Professor Chris Chapman will be presented
with the RAS Gold Medal and Professor Bob White will deliver the 2013
Harold Jeffreys lecture. The title of the lecture is 'Building the
dynamic crust of Iceland by rifting and volcanism'.
The meeting begins at 16:00 in the Geological Society lecture theatre,
Burlington House, London.
Please note that, commencing this year, the Harold Jeffreys lecture is
restricted to topics in geophysics and planetary physics, with a
separate lecture (the James Dungey lecture) for solar-terrestrial
physics. Although the stated deadline for nominations for the Harold
Jeffreys lectureship had passed, the awards committee would be happy to
consider further nominations that arrive in time to be considered at
their meeting in November.
The rubric for the Harold Jeffreys Lectureship states:
The Harold Jeffreys Lecture is given annually by a distinguished and
eloquent speaker on a suitable topic in geophysics. The Harold Jeffreys
lecture is generally reserved for topics concerning the interior
structure, formation and composition of the Earth and/or planets (e.g.
seismology, tectonics, geodesy, geomagnetism, solar system dynamics,
meteoritics). The speaker may be based in the UK or overseas.
I encourage you to nominate anyone who you believe would fit this
description. Details of how to nominate someone can be found on the RAS
website
(http://www.ras.org.uk/awards-and-grants/awards/2271-harold-jeffreys-lectureship).
My apologies if you receive duplicate copies of this email from
different mailing lists.
