One post is based in London, UK, and the other could be based in North Shields, Manchester, Bradford or Birmingham, UK, depending on the applicant. A PhD is desirable but not essential. The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to support the work of Dr Nick Gill. This Economic and Social Research Council funded post is available from 15th January 2014 to 20th June 2014 and will be based at Taylor House First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum chamber) hearing centre in London. The successful applicant will make detailed observations of asylum appeal case hearings from the public gallery of the hearing rooms at the centre.
Duties will include completing structured observations of approximately 4-10 tribunal hearings per week from the public gallery of the hearing rooms and recording salient characteristics of the hearings. The researcher will liaise closely with Dr Nick Gill (Principle Investigator) and Dr Andrew Burridge, (Research Fellow) on the project in order to communicate key findings, store data safely, and conduct interviews and ethnographic observations. The successful candidate will be required to attend a short (between 1-5 days) training course at the University of Exeter at the beginning of the contract and again at the end of the contract, for which travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed. The postholder will live within easy commuting distance of the tribunal centre as travel to work costs will not be covered.
Applicants will ideally possess a relevant PhD, though candidates not possessing a PhD will be considered, and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
Applicants will be able to organise complex information effectively and securely, deal sensitively with ethically challenging situations, communicate effectively as part of team, and identify and develop upon unexpected research opportunities.
