The Forgotten Character: experiments in form.
Charlotte Thompson and Pedro de Senna discuss their dramaturgical processes.
Commissioned by BBC Radio 3 (The Wire) and stemming from a period as writer in residence in a high security prison, Charlotte Thompson's Story of a Rude Gal addresses issues of otherness and representation, where the interplay between fictional and real world narratives is explored. Pushing the boundaries of the form, Thompson frames the dramaturgical narrative with factual information about the context in which the piece was written, offering the possibility for the audience to establish two interpretive spaces simultaneously. The real, imprisoned ‘other’, obscured and underrepresented by society is brought to existence in the fictional, liminal space of the performance text.
Similarly, Pedro de Senna's award-winning A tragédia de Ismene, princesa de Tebas (The tragedy of Ismene, princess of Thebes) rescues a forgotten character from the obscuritty of history and myth. The play investigates the story of Antigone’s sister Ismene, a minor character in the Theban dramatic and mythological canon, shifting perspectives and telling her story, ten years after Antigone’s death, when the city is again under attack. The play is written in verse, without punctuation, and making abundant use of found text (from Euripides to Shakespeare and Chekov); Ismene is thus re-inscribed
into our consciousness through the many voices that make up the piece, with a chance to construct her own story.
Charlotte and Pedro will be talking about their creative processes and how these articulate – and in turn are informed by – their research in this 1 hour event. Entry is free.
Hope to see you there,
Pedro
