Press and Marketing Manager
Job Description
Part-time, self employed position
1.5 days per week (£100 per day) increased to 2 days per week for 16 weeks February-May.
The Nightingale is a 48-seat venue in Brighton & Hove that presents a curated programme of exceptional performance focussing on New Writing and Dance, and supports artists to develop new work all year round. The Nightingale believes that there are unique and valuable qualities specific to small-scale performance work, and that theatre can happen anywhere.
A person with experience and/or training in marketing and press relations in the arts is required to join the team at the Nightingale. A successful applicant will have copy-writing experience, excellent verbal communication skills and a working knowledge of print design. A personal interest in contemporary performance, as well as a commitment to and understanding of the aims and objectives of the organisation are essential.
Purpose of Job
a. To implement and further develop the marketing strategy for the Nightingale ensuring that the audience development aims and sales targets in the Business Plan are met.
b. Continuing to establish, consolidate and develop the venue’s profile and position as a provider of development space for artists and high quality performance in Brighton and Hove in line with the recent successful ACE application that provides funding to support these activities.
Main Responsibilities:
Creative brand awareness and development
Working with the Artistic Director and Producer and Programme Manager to create communications that express the Nightingale’s artistic policy and develop the existing brand, as well as identifying new opportunities for increasing exposure.
Marketing materials and distribution
Working in-house or, where necessary, with freelance designers to create promotional print for the Nightingale’s curated seasons. Working with distribution companies and volunteers to manage the distribution of in-house print as well as print provided by visiting companies.
Press Liaison/Listings
Communicating with existing contacts and fostering new relationships with local and national press. Distribution of press releases and monthly listings. Organisation of PR events, e.g. launches and/or previews. Attending industry events and representing the Nightingale ethos in written and verbal outward communications.
Social Media and Blog
Maintaining and developing the Nightingale Theatre’s web presence via social media (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Vimeo) and updating the Nightingale’s blog. The social media platforms and blog should document the development work taking place at the Nightingale through interviews and features on artists and companies working or performing at the venue, highlight prominent work in small scale New Writing and Dance, and showcase the Nightingale’s artistic policy.
Membership Scheme
Promoting and managing benefits within the Nightingale’s fledgling membership scheme.
Enquiry Service
Providing phone, e-mail and occasional face-to-face responses to enquiries from UK and international artists and presenters, students, government bodies, the general public and press. Enquiries can range from general queries about the work of the Nightingale Theatre to specific requests for information on particular artists and showings. Some independent research may be necessary in order to address the enquiry.
Newsletters
Generating monthly branded newsletters about the Nightingale’s programmes and residencies using Mailchimp.
Press and Marketing Volunteer Supervision
The Nightingale is lucky to receive support through the work of volunteers. Where necessary the Press and Marketing Manager will be oversee and work with volunteers to complete press and marketing related tasks.
Closing date for applications: noon Friday 4th October 2013. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by Wednesday 9th October and interviews will be held on Tuesday 15th October at the Nightingale in Brighton.
