Seventy-five years on from the first arrival of the Kindertransport in
Britain, the concourse and platforms of train stations across the
country will burst into life with Suitcase, an original mix of
site-specific promenade performance and music which marks those
arrivals.
Created from original source material by Ros Merkin and executive
produced by Jane Merkin, daughters of Jo who came from Vienna on the
Kindertransport in December 1938, Suitcase reflects the stories of those
who were there. A promenade piece, the play will take small groups of
audience on a journey through 10 stations across Britain, stumbling on
scenes played out by bewildered Kindertransport children, the waiting
foster parents, transport organisers and bemused railway workers and
bystanders – as commuters hurrying to catch their trains are hijacked
by history. Accompanied by music which blends the tunes of the day with
music from the Old Country, Suitcase offers a unique synthesis of memory
and history in this site-specific performance for three performances on
one day only at each station.
