According to Gabriel Resources Ltd., the Canadian company about to
start in Rosia Montana, Romania, the largest open-cast mine in Europe,
the plan is to dig up the estimated 314 tons of gold in Rosia Montana
using an astonishing amount of 40 tons of cyanide per day.
The project has triggered fierce opposition as the gold mine would
destroy some villages and use an average of 12,000 tonnes of cyanide a
year.
Environmentalists and civic-rights groups are concerned because the
right to a safe environment is violated and because the government
adopted a draft law saying the mine is of national interest and
overruling previous regulations.
