Dear Ann
I often recommend Audio Notetaker for general note taking support, but
have never used it for a student with a hearing impairment. Students
seem to make use of it and like it. It is a good support to note taking
for students with dyslexia etc. as it assists with viewing and
organising notes alongside recordings, which are visualised in a way
which is easy to navigate. In my opinion, it is the best software-based
solution for note taking (not counting stereotype etc. as software-based
since they involve people too), but it does rely on high quality audio
input, and preferably on the student being able to take some notes in
lectures.
I'd be a more dubious about using it as the only solution with a student
with a hearing impairment unless I was sure the recording was going to
be of sufficient quality for them to hear and they would be able to
write some notes in lectures (i.e. not lipreading dependent entirely) so
as to avoid having to listen to the whole lecture again later.
It is hard to know whether audio notetaker is appropriate without
knowing the student's situation and extent of hearing loss.
With best wishes,
Rachel
