Dear study group members,
The Bourdieu study group are going to launch a monthly debate via our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/bsabourdieu. This follows the fiercely debated topic over the weekend about if and how Oxbridge reproduces social inequalities after new research revealed that Oxford undergraduates help to reproduce social inequalities by denying that their social class or background had anything to do with their admission, but was instead based on merit: Legitimating status: perceptions of meritocracy and inequality among undergraduates at an elite British university (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/berj.3108/abstract).
Our next online debate will be on social class in contemporary Britain, this will be in preparation for our forthcoming event: Measuring Social Class: Bourdieusian Approaches: http://bsabourdieu.wordpress.com/2013/09/02/event-measuring-social-class-bourdieusian-approaches/. Early booking is recommended as tickets are selling out very fast.
We are excited to announce that the Bourdieu study group will be holding a small event sometime in February on: Bourdieu in migration and ’race’/ethnicity studies. This event will include key note speakers as well as a call for papers.
We’ve also had a request. Can anyone recommend any papers or book sections in which Bourdieu deals with the concept conatus? Steve Fuller discusses it in 'Pierre Bourdieu: Key Concepts'.
Best wishes, Jenny
