I strongly believe that BAFTS should join the academic action to free the renowned Canadian documentary film-maker and his companion Tarek Loubani, a doctor, who were arrested in Cairo on 15 August. Subject: F4P ACTION: John and Tarek on hunger strike: Urgent call for academic letters
Dear F4P,
John and Tarek have been denied release, and are detained for an additional 15 days. They began a hunger strike this week. Read press release here:
http://rabble.ca/news/2013/09/hunger-strike-canadians-jailed-egypt-refuse-food-to-protest-arbitrary-detention
Yesterday the Toronto Star Editorial called for John and Tarek's release:
http://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorials/2013/09/17/egypt_should_free_two_canadians_held_without_charge_editorial.html
ACADEMIC ACTION: It is more urgent than ever to organize letters from your University Presidents, Faculty Associations, Student Associations, Departments etc. A review of their detention is scheduled for September 25 - please request that letters be sent before that date. Scroll to the end of this email for resources, sample letters, addresses etc.
This week two more Faculty Associations and one more university President have written letters of support. This brings us to a current total of 15 Faculty Associations plus CAUT and OCUFA, and 10 University Presidents - let's aim to double these numbers in the next week.
* McMaster University, President Patrick Deane
* McGill Association of University Teachers (MAUT)
* University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA)
Over 300 academic and cultural figures internationally also signed a letter of support last week:

Keep the pressure up - organizational letters from the academy matter!
Letters should be written to:
In Canada, Minister John Baird and Prime Minister Stephen Harper:
See Change.org petition for details: https://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/canadian-government-help-free-tarek-and-john
In Egypt, the Interim President Adly Mahmoud Mansour and others
See Amnesty International urgent action for details:

When you receive a copy of the letter, please also send it to: [log in to unmask]<[log in to unmask]" target="_blank">http:[log in to unmask]>
