Dear Colleagues,
I'm looking for some advice and guidance.
If a student has submitted their thesis for examination but has not sought ethical approval or are trying to seek ehtical approval retrospectively after the research has been carried out, what procedure would be followed at your HEI for both student and supervisor?
My own thinking is along the lines of these 3 options but I'm unsure which would be the best path to go down:
1: Raise the issue with the Research Degrees Examination Board
2: Follow the research misconduct process, within my HEIs misconduct policy 'misconduct can be failure to follow accepted procedures and/or intentional non-compliance with terms and conditions governing the award of external funding for research'.
3: To ask the School to identify who is at fault - the student or the supervisor, if fault lies with the student to then approach the research examination board or begin the research misconduct process and if the fault lies with the supervisor for them to not be allowed to supervise any new students until mandatory training on research governance and ethics is completed.
If you have a procedure at your HEI or have experience of a similar situation I would appreciate your help on this.
