Hi,
I am working on a very rich 4th century deposit of spelt (Triticum spelta)from Gloucestershire UK. it appears that it was mostly still within the glume (see photos) and was stored in a reused Roman bath house, which burnt down. The material is a mixture of charred (mainly grain and robust chaff) silicified (light chaff including awns) and mineralised (light chaff). Does any one know of similar deposits in or outside of the UK. I can find references to the destruction of naked grain deposits from granaries but not crops still retained as spikelets. I am also interested in information about the re-use of villa buildings for cereal processing.
I would be grateful for any suggestions/references.
Thanks
Kath
