Subject: [ACADEMIC-STUDY-MAGIC] Art as Religion: the Esoteric-Aesthetic manifesto of Sar Péladan
Hello all and apologies for any cross-posting,
I've been a bit of a lurker, mainly because I've been focused on my doctoral research and artwork based on the work of the much maligned French occultist and author Joséphin Péladan, a lesser known figure of the French Occult Revival. In a nutshell, his vision was to ignite a cultural renaissance through art, based in part on Orphic, NeoPlatonist, and Rosicrucian principles, and this is the subject of my doctoral thesis (due for completion in Spring 2014, Uni. of Essex, UK). In my dual role as scholar and artist, my research is an attempt to set the record straight regarding Péladan's historical notoriety, and to highlight those aspects of his aesthetic theory that might be of interest to artists (especially those with an esoteric bent) today. To this end I'm producing a series of illustrations of key themes in his work, some of which will be featured at the upcoming Neo-Symbolist Salon opening in Madrid on October 30th. It's early days, but I think that some of the material from this project might be of interest to list members.
I recently translated a large part of Péladan's esoteric-aesthetic manifesto into English (hardly any of his work exists in English), and it can be found here on my website dedicated to my research: http://peladan.org/?p=1407 (recently featured on a post over at disinfo.com: https://disinfo.com/2013/08/art-is-a-religion-an-aesthetic-esoteric-manifesto-by-joseph-peladan/). This website also contains a number of other translations, including one recently published in The Fenris Wolf (Edda press, Stockholm, 2013).
My illustrations, incorporating an introduction to the project and brief explanations of the symbolic content in relation to Péladan's work can be found here: http://sashachaitow.co.uk/making-the-invisible-visible-the-peladan-project/
and more information on the Neo-Symbolist Salon in Madrid (for which I have also just written an article on Péladan's aesthetics for inclusion in the catalogue) is available here (Spanish only): http://www.herejiaybelleza.com/convocatoria-a-artistas-i-salon-neo-simbolista/hayqueponerindex.php/convocatoria-a-artistas-i-salon-neo-simbolista/
A paper filling in the context and introducing Péladan can be found here: http://peladan.org/?page_id=1007
Hope some of this is of interest to those of you interested in the French Occult Revival - or art, or both!
Best,
Sasha
