QMUL has only had one problem when updating firmware - and that was when
due to a lack of communication, a machine got rebooted whilst the
firmware was being updated. We did manage to get it back.
I think therefore that there's a small risk of data loss with a firmware
update. I suspect it is on a par with accidentally writing the OS to the
wrong partition - and wiping your data that way.
I run the upgrade in a screen session from data local to the machine
(not an an NFS share).
Also, I'd update iDRAC first (or last) - and check it works before doing
the other stuff - that way you can still see the node without having to
go to the data centre.
In summary, there's clearly a risk, but I think it is quite low.
