Hi Everyone,
It's possible that this might be something that is discussed at the next
Technical Managers' forum in Letchworth on October 16th. Norwich isn't the
only location in the Region to have experienced BT Failures. There were some
major outages which were probably linked to issues affecting the University
of Hertfordshire.
SJ 6 is due to go live within the next six months and the impact of this
needs to be assessed as is the increased 4G (LTE) coverage which is due
across the Country. I've been told by Vodafone staff that Cambridge should
be covered by this at Christmas and I shouldn't have to upgrade my contract
or my current Windows 8 Phone. GSM wireless routers are now also becoming
more widely available, not just the MiFi ones but more robust devices such
as the DrayTek Vigor 2925 Triple-WAN Wireless-N Broadband Router with VPN &
3G/4G Support (300Mbps). These could provide some Providers with a failover
for emergencies. It would be useful if people could go into their local
Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange or O2 shops, whichever is your preferred brand
and ask what their plans are for rolling the service out in their area. H3G
have the following list of locations due to be covered by 2014: Cambridge,
Ipswich, Luton, Norwich, Peterborough, Southend on Sea and Watford. They say
their 14Mbps service will be a free upgrade to phones that can support it
It would certainly provide an interesting discussion point at the forum. You
can book for this at http://bit.ly/rsce-events if you want to share views,
news or any clues to what's happening!
Kindest Regards,
Thomas

Subject: Resilient Internet Links
In the last 8 weeks we have experienced several significant Internet
outages.
Today's issue left us with no Internet all morning until 12:30. I don't
need to go into the impact as you'll all know how important it is.
The question is who is running resilient links and how are you providing
them?
Our current JANET connection is 500Mb although load was only peaking <200Mb
prior to the recent upgrade.
I should point out that our issues all seem to have been with BT and not
directly JANET.
Thanks,
John
