Mei-mei Berssenbrugge was born in Beijing and grew up in Massachusetts. She received her B.A. from Reed College and an M.F.A, from Columbia University
She is the author of 12 books of poetry including Empathy (Station Hill Pres, 1989), Hiddenness with Richard Tuttle (Whitney Museum Library Fellows, 1987), Four Year Old Girl (Kelsey St. Press, 1998) and I Love Artists: New and Selected Poems, (University of California Press, 2006). Her most recent book of poems, Hello, the Roses, was published by New Directions in 2013.
She has collaborated with many artists in the book arts and in theatre, most frequently with Kiki Smith and Richard Tuttle, her husband. A Lit Cloud with Kiki Smith was published by Lelong Gallery in 2012. Hello, the Roses was exhibited as a collaboration with Richard Tuttle at the Munich Kunstverein in 2012.
She has received numerous award, including two National Endowment for the Art Awards and is contributing editor to Conjunctions Magazine. She divides her time between northern New Mexico and New York City and Maine.
