Residential Workshop at Whitestone Arts with Eilon Morris
27 – 29 September 2013 West Yorkshire, UK
This residential workshop on the edge of the South Pennine Moors takes walking as a starting point for the exploration and embodiment of rhythm. Each participant will have the opportunity to encounter rhythm as a lived experience, rooted in the physicality of their own body, its relationship to others and to the environment, by sharing guided moorland walks and exploring these through studio-based practice.
Walking through the wild and open landscape, with its sense of space and time, will be inspiration and mapping for attending to our own sense of inner and outer rhythm. These rhythmic and polyrhythmic elements will be further developed in the studio through movement and voice exercises, playing with and layering fixed forms and improvisations, ensemble and solo practices.
Suitable for performers, students, creative practitioners and walkers with an interest in rhythm and movement, including actors, dancers, musicians, writers, directors and choreographers.
Cost: £195 including tuition, food and accommodation.
Price includes two nights accommodation (shared rooms of 2-3 people)at Whitestone Arts, two breakfasts, two lunches, and two evening meals.
Camping options are available at reduced rates:2 tents available, or bring your own.
To reserve a place, a deposit of £50 will be required, with full payment by 1 September.
Facilitator:
Eilon Morris is an Australian actor-musician, associate director of Duende and a member of Obra theatre company. Having recently completed a doctorate exploring the use of rhythm in actor training, Eilon has developed a number of training approaches inspired by his work with theatre practitioners John Britton and Nicolás Núñez and the TaKeTiNa practices of Reinhard Flatischler. These approaches also draw from his study of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion and song. Eilon has presented workshops and masterclasses on rhythm for performers at Central School of Speech and Drama in London, the Taller de Investigación Teatral in Mexico City, and at the Au Brana Cultural Centre in Southern France.
Venue:
Whitestone Arts was established in 2003 by playwright Judith Adams, artist/photographer Simon Warner and video/stage designer Leo Warner of Fifty Nine Productions as a producing organization and as a small, flexible centre that provides working space and shared accommodation for its associates and any individual or organization wishing to explore shared creativity in a peaceful, simple and low-tech environment. We especially encourage crossing the line between mind and body by linking inner and outer experience through direct access to the moors.
