According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, high school
athletes suffer an estimated 2 million injuries and rack up about 500,000
doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations a year.
.
STOP Sports Injuries is a campaign striving to teach prevention tips to
curb sports injuries. At program's end, the group of parents, coaches and
other attendees received pledge cards with resolutions to hopefully
prevent further injuries.
.
But some of the STOP pledge resolutions might, at first glance, seem to
contradict basic assumptions of sports, such as the character-building
athlete who perseveres through adversity. For example, the athlete's
resolution included a line about not "playing through pain."
.
But as former JSU Coach Jack Crowe explained, there are differences in
pain. Part of a coach's responsibility, along with an athletic trainer, is
knowing how bad an injury may be, and what that player's threshold is.
.
"There's a difference between pain and injury," he said. "You don't mess
around with pain in the head, or in the back. There's a difference between
pushing through things and not being able to function."
.
Crowe said the danger among younger athletes is in programs that don't
have access to trainers or people with medical experience.
.
One of the reasons for the forum was to provide coaches and parents with
tips in evaluating a child's ability to continue playing, or indeed to
play at all. A woman asked the panel how young should a child be before
attempting contact sports, like football.
