Hi All,
SHCG are recruiting a freelancer for a Project Co-ordinator for our 'Tools for the Trade' ACE funded project. Please find details below and attached. Any questions please feel free to email on [log in to unmask] Best, Emma Harper, SHCG Committee
Project Co-ordinator for 'Tools for the Trade' ACE funded project Social History Curators Group
Contract: Freelance
Hours: Part time
Introduction
The Social History Curators Group exists to improve the status and standards of social history and allied disciplines within museum.
Every social history museum collection contains tools used in local industries However evaluation of SHCG's membership shows that increasingly, museum professionals feel unable to answer the most basic of questions - what those tools are, when they were used/made and how they were used.
Project and Aims
SHCG have secured funding from Arts Council England to commission a series of up to 6 films, interviewing specialists/long-standing curators at museums with significant collections about a type of tool with which they are experienced, imparting their knowledge about how to identify them, how to date them, and demonstrating how they were used.
Tools/topics which the films could cover are:
- Tools for construction; woodworking; blacksmith/farrier; coopers; leather/shoe repair; dressmaking/millinery; agriculture.
In contrast with some of the films available on sites such as YouTube, viewers of these films will be confident that the information held within the resources are of a high, historically accurate, quality. The films will provide a way to share collections knowledge and increase understanding and skills of users. The films will be made freely available online, extending the reach of the resources to all SHCG members, museum professionals, volunteers and all interested.
Deliverables:
1. The production of up to 6 films as outlined above harnessing the collections knowledge and understanding of specialists and/or established curators
2. The dissemination of this knowledge via firstBASE, SHCG membership and Collections Link,
3. Comprehensive evaluation of the project
Tasks
The Project Co-ordinator, in collaboration with the SHCG firstBASE Editorial Committee and with the support of the overall SHCG committee, would be required to carry out the following tasks:
1. Identify up to 10 possible tools, of which 6 could be featured in the films and approach specialists/museums to be interviewed about the tools.
2. Commission and manage a film maker to undertake the production of up to 6 films
3. Undertake all practical aspects of the commissioning of the films, such as contacting and liaising with specialists and film maker
4. Co-ordinate with SHCG Web Officer and firstBASE Editorial Committee to ensure that all the aims of the project are met, for example ensuring that the films produced are of a high quality, meet the aims, and are usable on the firstBASE site.
Proposed Timeline:
The project will run from August 2013 to March 2014.
Liaising with and briefing specialists to be interviewed and filming will take place during the autumn and winter 2013.
Editing and online upload of the films and the evaluation of the project will be carried out in February and March 2014.
