Hi Dawn
I would always adhere to the DOH Records Management Code of Practice, however it doesn’t go down the specific level of miscarriages and terminations, however:
Miscarriage I would follow - Maternity (all obstetric and midwifery records, including those of episodes of maternity care that end in stillbirth or where the child later dies) - 25 years after the birth of the last child
TOP - comes under General Specialties therefore you would keep 8 years (in adults) or until 25th birthday in a child (age 26 if entry made when young person was 17).
Kind Regards

Subject: Records of unborn children
Interesting query this one. Childrens Services have a client who frequently becomes pregnant and either miscarries or terminates the pregnancy. Each time she becomes pregnant a separate paper file (and electronic database entry) is created for the unborn child. No information is placed on the file after the termination or miscarriage. Has anyone any suggestions as to how long we should be keeping the information of the unborn child for?
regards,
Dawn
