Radical Interpretation in Classical Performance
Recital, workshop, discussion at the University of Surrey
Wednesday 30th October 2013 from 1.10 pm
Following their provocative CMPCP/IMR seminar, ‘How creative can a musical practice be?’, Daniel Leech-Wilkinson and Mine Dogantan Dack visit the University of Surrey to present their research on the extension of creative limits in classical music performance. A lunchtime recital will demonstrate the possibilities of radically different readings of canonical scores across a range of instrumental and vocal repertoire. A workshop will involve Music students and staff from the School of Arts at Surrey and will begin to examine the pedagogical consequences of rethinking the classical performer’s obligations and freedoms. A concluding panel discussion will comprise musicologists, performers, composers, theatre and performance scholars, opening out the notion of radically creative interpretation across disciplines and modes of practice, examining its implications and debating its significance within wider artistic and cultural fields.
This half-day event will present this potentially controversial research from a broad platform and seek ways that it can continue to develop and resonate within the academy, the performance space and the arts.
