Dear Colleagues,
In recent months there have been a number of developments regarding opportunities for upper atmosphere/ionosphere science in the UK.
NERC has devolved responsibility for its national capability facilities to the centres it deems most appropriate. For upper atmosphere facilities the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the British Antarctic Survey will provide a joint management structure with each centre taking a lead where appropriate (for example BAS will lead on EISCAT and NCAS will lead on the MST radar).
As part of this move NCAS has inaugurated an Upper Atmosphere Group to sit alongside its other programmes (http://www.ncas.ac.uk/index.php/en/). For the moment this group comprises Ian McCrea and Steve Crothers from the EISCAT support group, but it is envisaged that this will expand over time (NCAS defines upper atmosphere as everything above the stratopause).
We would like to invite you to a community meeting to discuss this and other important issues that impact upper atmosphere, ionosphere and space weather in the UK in the near future.
Topics for discussion will include:
NCAS and the upper atmosphere group - what this could mean for our community,
Upper atmosphere/ionosphere radars and NCAS (and other instruments),
Changes to the way NERC is funding science,
Space Weather in NERC and beyond,
EISCAT-3D and other potential new infrastructure
We would like to hold the meeting as soon as possible (and particularly before the next teaching term gets into full swing), therefore we propose to have a 1 day meeting:
Where: British Antarctic Survey (http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/about_bas/contact/travel_to_cambridge.php)
When: 10 am - 5 pm on a day in the week commencing 9th September
Please indicate your availability, as soon as possible, by using the following doodle poll: http://doodle.com/z7qmkhxh4hdffrii
Tea and coffee will be provided.
Lunch will be available for purchase at the BAS canteen for those who wish to do so.
It would be advantageous for at least one member of each group to come along and report back to their colleagues.
I would particularly encourage younger and middle career colleagues to attend as we will be discussing topics that could particularly impact our science area within the next 10 years.
Best regards
Andrew
