THE STATESMAN'S YEARBOOK CELEBRATES 150 YEARS
One of a handful of Victorian annual reference works to survive to 2013
19 August 2013: The Statesman's Yearbook, an annual reference book published by Palgrave Macmillan and based on an idea by William Gladstone, celebrates its 150th edition this week.
The Yearbook presents a political, economic and social account of every country of the world together with facts and analysis, is available in print and online, and is one of only three annual Victorian reference works to still survive in print. The others are Pears Cyclopaedia and Wisden's Cricket Almanac.
Other famous reference works, including the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Annual Register, are now online only or have ceased production altogether.
Dr Barry Turner, editor of The Statesman's Yearbook said: "In an age where anyone can find spurious information online, people still want a reliable source of international information they can trust. The Statesman's Yearbook has a reputation for quality carefully maintained across three centuries.
"But our success can also partly be attributed to keeping up with the times. You can download our entire archive online, and find us on Facebook. We're very proud to be publishing our 150th edition, and I am excited to see what the future has in store."
In its 150 year history, The Statesman's Yearbook has published approximately 270,000 pages. The 2014 edition contains 1.39 million words.
