Good afternoon,
Historical theses with no abstract can have a basic table of contents and we find it useful to include this when there is no abstract . Generally we require an abstract because we cannot always make the thesis file available. Plus this metadata field is picked up via OAI-PMH and displayed through our discovery layer.
Kind regards,
Allison

It may also be worth noting that many historical theses (i.e. before
WWII) do not have an abstract in the modern sense.
