I currently have a vacancy for a Research Fellow in Infrastructure Systems Risk here at Cranfield University.  The post is for 3 years and the salary is £30,091 - £33.539 per annum.


We seek a full time Research Fellow in Infrastructure Systems Risk to strengthen our successful Centre for Environmental Risks and Futures (CERF). CERF is recognised internationally for its research, education, training and consultancy and merges the expertise in risk science developed under the Defra/NERC/EPSRC/ESRC funded Risk Centre with expertise in modeling, economics and life cycle assessment.  Our work includes research on critical infrastructure, natural hazards, emerging technologies, agriculture, economics, policy and regulation, life cycle analysis as well as horizon scanning and scenario analysis.  Our goal is to become an incubator for the innovation and application of environmental risk science, building a global reputation for delivering impact to government, industry and the public through high quality research and a vibrant programme of knowledge exchange.

This post is connected with a new large EPSRC funded collaborative project which will create an International Centre for Infrastructure Futures (ICIF). The appointee will join a successful multi-disciplinary team and will play an active role in this environment, adapting to changing work patterns and needs.  He/she would be expected to deliver outputs across a range of research challenges which will shape the future of infrastructure based services, including:

  *   manipulate and visualise real world infrastructure data and model results, including the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  *   create models of network cascading failures for risk identification and analysis
  *   contribute to knowledge about infrastructure by modelling how network risks can be detected and how they can influence financial appraisal and investment decisions
  *   assess interdependency risks at study sites, and explore strategic regional issues and the responses that utilities, contractors, regulators and insurers may need
  *   investigate infrastructure topologies and hierarchies using network analysis to reveal new regimes with improved resilience to shock/risk diffusion
  *   prepare technical reports, papers and research proposals as required
  *   maintain close contact with high profile UK/overseas stakeholders (e.g. utilities, contractors, government departments and agencies, regulators) and research partners
  *   develop new skills as required to establish and develop new research areas

We invite applications from candidates who have a PhD in an appropriate field (i.e. risk analysis, infrastructure risk, geospatial analysis, systems modelling), and who possess demonstrated proficiency in systems modelling/geospatial research methods. Experience in an active research environment, a good working knowledge of infrastructure risks, particularly relating to climate change, and systems modelling or geospatial analysis would be welcome.  Candidates should be innovative systems thinkers, who adopt a flexible approach to their work, and have a proven track record of high quality journal publication.
