*TOPIC*: China's Growth as a Maritime Power- Global Sustainability
China has become the greatest driver of global seaborne trade and
international commerce. The country has firmly established itself as the
world’s largest shipbuilder (and ship recycler), top contributor to the
global commercial fleets; to the global seafarer’s market; and to port
development projects around the world. The challenges of the country’s
huge demand for resources to maintain its unprecedented economic growth,
are reaching far beyond national boundaries and increasing to a global
scale. Meanwhile, it is recognised by the world community that China’s
current patterns of production and consumption are placing enormous
pressure on the planet. Indeed, the necessity to preserve the earth for
future generations is rapidly becoming mainstream and forms discussion
and debate at all levels.
This conference will examine China’s growth, impact and implications in
the maritime domain, and will focus on the economic, social and
environmental dimensions.
