The worst and worrying thing, when a company wants to give a PAID ‘internship’ role to a person, who is planning to build ‘a year’s experience in archives prior to undertaking a postgraduate course in archives/records management’.
It is very hard to understand: why the paid ‘internship’ role, bearing all tasks that can be done by an assistant archivist or even by an archivist, goes to a person without degree. I am sure, someone with the archive/records management degree would be very happy to take this role and to be paid. The salary is usually in the same level, as it would be for the assistant or archivist.
I feel we should care more about people, who already studied, and less about people, who are planning to see, if they want or like to ‘develop’ their career in the archive/records management sector.
Are we such a ‘throw away‘ society and do not value people, who gained skills and diploma earlier? What a life are we planning to give to interns? Helping them to get experiences and degrees, and then abandoning them as we did with people with diplomas?
