The following vacancy has arisen for an Assistant Archivist (maternity cover) at the Royal Opera House Collections.

£25,132 per annum pro-rata (full-time)
7 months fixed-term contract (September 2013 to April 2014)
The Royal Opera House is the major lyric arts theatre in the United Kingdom, enjoying an international reputation for excellence. The Royal Opera House Collections contain materials covering the history of the three theatres that have stood on the site since 1732.
We are currently seeking an experienced Assistant Archivist (maternity cover) to assist in managing the full range of services required to ensure the safe and appropriate care and storage of, and access to, the Collections. Reporting to the Archivist, the responsibilities of the role will include:
- Assisting in the management of the Collections, including preparing collections for the forthcoming move to a new site, monitoring environmental conditions, and participating in conservation projects.
- Identifying and processing new acquisitions and deposits of materials from external sources and internal departments.
- Helping to manage the department’s information service, researching and answering enquiries and supervising visiting researchers.
- Maintaining and cataloguing specific collections, in particular the Donald Southern Photographic Collection and the Ballet and Opera Artist and Production Photographs, using Adlib and in-house standards.
The successful candidate will hold a post-graduate qualification in Archives Administration and be able to demonstrate:
- Sufficient experience of working in an archive/collection and associated routines.
- Knowledge of archival cataloguing standards and databases, including ISAD(G), Adlib, and experience of cataloguing large collections.
- Experience of reader services and strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize.
- Some knowledge of ballet, music and opera and the history and work of the Royal Opera House is desirable.
The role is based at Covent Garden, but involves working regularly at offsite stores.
