The CRC 755 “Nanoscale Photonic Imaging” at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
seeks qualified applicants for the positions of a
PhD-Student
(salary group EG 13, TV-L, 26.7 hours/week)
to begin on or after October 1, 2013, ending June 30, 2015.
Task: Modeling and statistics of filament structures that arise in the early differentiation of adult stem cells.
The PhD-student will be involved in the sub-project B8 “Formation of stress fibers in adult stem cells“, which is part of the CRC 755 “Nanoscale Photonic Imaging”. Differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (HMSCs) towards distinct lineages can be directed by carefully selecting the elasticity of the substrate they adhere to. The project aims at elucidating the mechanical interactions of HMSCs with the matrix at early times by analyzing structure and formation of acto-myosin stress fibers. Experiments using state-of-the-art microscopy techniques will be complemented with sophisticated image segmentation algorithms and a novel statistical analysis based on change point models for underlying dynamical point processes, to better understand the complex interplay of mechanical and biochemical processes of mechano-sensing phenomena.
Successful candidates should have an excellent Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics or a related area with focus on one of the fields of statistics, stochastic geometry or differential geometry combined with a strong interest in a project that brings the above fields together including intense collaboration with colleagues from physics and biology.
