Hi Sarah
I have attached the Food Standard guidance on fitness to work which is helpful. P13 has an extract which reads;
Non-infective causes of symptoms
Infections are not the only cause of diarrhoea and vomiting and exclusion is
not required where there is good evidence of a non-infective cause. Examples
of this are listed below.
• Morning sickness during pregnancy.
• Some medicines and medical treatments.
• Inflammation of the bowel including diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, and
Crohn's disease.
• Irritable bowel syndrome.
• Cancer of the bowel.
• Malabsorption syndromes (e.g. coeliac disease and cystic fibrosis).
• Dietary indiscretion (e.g. consuming too much alcohol or spicy food.).
So in summary they do not need to be excluded if it is non-infectious and their personal hygiene is excellent. I have members of my family who have this condition and know from experience that managing it by diet alone is usually unsuccessful, I would therefore ask the question of why he isn't prescribed medication to control the flares which he is likely to be now experiencing - is he under the care of a specialist?. I attach the latest NICE guidance (June, 2013) and a nice article which discusses treatment options.
Best wishes
Karen

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Ulcerative Colitis / Food industry
Dear All,
I am new to this site and also new to my post within the food industry (and being a lone practitioner).
I have an employee that says he was diagnosed with ulcerative Colitis 2 years ago and managing his condition through diet. His main symptom of diarrhoea is obviously the problem as usually any D & V symptoms require an immeadiate exclusion from the factory.
I just wondered if anyone else working within the food industry had come across this and had any tips on how to manage it and support this employee. He says that he has been able to manage the symptoms but recently has had a couple of episodes of short term SA and has come to me for advice.
I have found this site and the emails a very useful source of information - Thank you to everyone that contributes to it.
Thanks
Sarah Walker
